My Healthy Life

Most people think I am vegetarian, super strict when it comes to food and no fun to have around for dinner, sorry to disappoint you, I am not "hardcore healthy".

I don’t want to make my life or the people around me miserable in my pursuit of health. I try to find a balance and be realistic about what I can achieve. Most importantly I make conscious decisions about what I put in my body and what I do to my body. Below are my non-negotiables, things I will not compromise on.

I suppose I would define myself as an ethical omnivore. I eat mostly vegetables preferably organic or homegrown, raw or lightly cooked. A few times a week I eat small amounts of good quality free range, grass fed meat and poultry or locally caught small fish. I also eat pasture raised eggs, the freshest eggs I can find. My weakness is dairy, I cannot resist goat’s yoghurt and cheese. I drink water that we collect from the mountain in winter or from Newlands spring, it tastes delicious. I also enjoy a glass of organic red wine some evenings with my dinner.

I eat mostly a grain free diet because it works for me. I am lucky because I don’t have a sweet tooth but I do enjoy 85% dark chocolate, berries and fresh figs, as a treat. I have more energy and feel lighter when I eat like this. That is not to say I cannot sometimes be tempted by a piece of sourdough bread or a slice of cheesecake. Oh and I love my one cup of Hout Bay Coffee in the morning whizzed up with a little unsalted butter and MCT oil, it fires up my brain and makes me feel like superwoman.

Getting up early and walking my dogs on one of the many mountains that surround Hout Bay, is the only way I can start the day, this is my meditation. When I need a break I potter around my garden. I practice yoga at home or in a class and I love to dance with my husband Mike, currently Salsa.  Nothing refreshes more from the summer heat than a swim in the icy sea water, so beach time is a must for me. Cooking for family and friends makes me happy.

My life purpose is to learn and share my knowledge with others. I also like to share smiles, because they are contagious.

Health is about the food you eat, and the way you move your body.
It's about stilling the mind and connecting to others and nature.
Health is about living a meaningful life that brings you joy & fulfilment.
Find ways to be healthy every day, have fun & don't get stressed or obsess about it.
Health may not look the same for everyone but being healthy is worth striving for.
